Answering Common Interview Questions

Why Prepare for an Interview?

An interview is not just a test of your English—it is your opportunity to show an employer that you have the skills, attitude, and fit for their team.

In Canada, employers ask specific types of questions to see how you react under pressure, how you handle workplace challenges, and whether you have researched their company. Preparing your answers in advance helps you speak smoothly, reduces nervousness, and ensures you highlight your best strengths with confidence.

I. Read and practise the following conversation:

Ms. Taylor, the hiring manager at Maple Retail, is interviewing Carlos, an applicant for a retail customer service position.

Ms. Taylor: Good morning, Carlos! Thank you for coming in today. How are you?

Carlos: Good morning, Ms. Taylor. I’m doing well, thank you. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Ms. Taylor: Great. Let’s get started. 1. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Carlos: Sure! I have over three years of experience in customer service and retail sales. In my previous role, I handled customer inquiries, managed cash registers, and assisted with inventory. I am detail-oriented, enjoy working with people, and am eager to contribute my skills to your team.

Ms. Taylor: Excellent. 2. Why do you want to work for our company?

Carlos: I have been following Maple Retail for a while, and I really admire your focus on community involvement and high-quality customer care. I want to work for a company that values teamwork and offers opportunities for professional growth.

Ms. Taylor: 3. What would you say is your greatest strength?

Carlos: My greatest strength is problem-solving. I stay calm when customers are upset, and I always listen carefully to find a solution that satisfies both the customer and company policy.

Ms. Taylor: 4. What about a weakness? What is your biggest weakness?

Carlos: In the past, I sometimes found it difficult to say "no" when coworkers asked for help, which made my own schedule very busy. To improve, I learned how to prioritize my daily tasks better using a planner, which helps me manage my workload efficiently.

Ms. Taylor: 5. Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer.

Carlos: At my last job, a customer was upset about a defective product. I stayed calm, listened attentively to her complaint, and apologized for the inconvenience. I then processed an exchange according to our store policy. The customer left happy and thanked me for my patience.

Ms. Taylor: 6. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Carlos: In five years, I hope to have expanded my industry knowledge and developed into a team lead or supervisor role within this company.

Ms. Taylor: Wonderful. Do you have any questions for me?

Carlos: Yes! What are the key qualities of someone who succeeds in this position?

Ms. Taylor: Great question! We look for someone who is reliable, has strong communication skills, and genuinely enjoys helping customers solve problems.

Carlos: That sounds wonderful. Thank you for sharing that.

Ms. Taylor: Thank you for coming in today, Carlos. We still have a few other interviews to perform this week, and we will contact you next week with an update.

Carlos: Thank you very much for your time and consideration, Ms. Taylor. Have a great day!

How to structure answers for question #5 using STAR:

  • S – Situation: Describe the context/problem briefly. ("At my last job, a customer was upset...")

  • T – Task: Explain your responsibility or duty. ("I needed to resolve the issue quickly...")

  • A – Action: Detail the steps you took. ("I listened calmly and checked our store policy...")

  • R – Result: Share the positive outcome. ("The customer left happy and satisfied.")

Work in groups:

Exchange your previous experiences where you used the "STAR Method" to resolve an issue.

Grammar Focus:

Present Perfect vs Past Simple

Present Perfect (have/has + past participle):

Used for general work experience, duration up to now, or habits without a specific completed time.

  • Example: "I have worked in retail for three years." / "I have handled many customer complaints."

Simple Past (regular -ed / irregular forms):

Used for specific events, actions, and STAR stories that happened at a clear time in the past.

  • Example: "Last month, an upset customer came to the desk..." / "I processed a replacement item immediately."

Activity 1: Read each interview snippet below. Determine whether the speaker is describing General Work Experience (Present Perfect) or telling a Specific STAR Story (Simple Past). Write "GE" for General Experience or "SS" for Specific Story on the line provided.

  1. _____ "I have dealt with many difficult situations during my time as a store associate."

  2. _____ "Two weeks ago, a customer came to the counter demanding a cash refund without a receipt."

  3. _____ "Over the past three years, I have processed hundreds of online product exchanges."

  4. _____ "My supervisor noticed the delay and asked me to take over the inventory log."

  5. _____ "I have always taken pride in maintaining an organized and safe work environment."

  6. _____ "I listened carefully to her complaint, apologized for the error, and called my manager."

  7. _____ "Our team has completed several large inventory audits since I joined the company."

  8. _____ "I organized the backroom storage shelves by category to fix the issue."

Challenge Section: Find the Transition Point

In a real interview response, candidates often start with the Present Perfect to set up their general background, then switch to the Simple Past to tell their specific STAR story.

Instructions: Read the response below. Underline the sentence where the speaker switches from General Experience to a Specific Story.

"I have worked in customer service for over four years, so I have learned how to stay calm under pressure. Last winter, our store experienced a sudden power outage during peak holiday shopping hours. I immediately guided shoppers toward the main exit using emergency flashlights and helped secure the cash registers."
