Part 1: Reading:

Read the following passage and answer the questions:

Many new immigrants come to Canada every year. They learn English, but some things are still difficult. One big culture challenge is small talk.

Small talk is short, friendly conversation with people you do not know well. Canadians like to make small talk in many places. They speak to people at the bus stop, in the grocery store, at work, or in the elevator.

Canadians often talk about simple things, like plans for the weekend or daily life. They say things like, "Have a good weekend!"

In some countries, people do not talk to strangers. They only speak when they have important business. Because of this, small talk can feel strange or scary for new immigrants. However, small talk in Canada is just a good way to be friendly and show respect.

Part 2: Vocabulary List

1. Small talk: Short, friendly conversation about simple things. Example: We made small talk while waiting for the bus.

2. Immigrant: A person who comes to live in a new country. Example: Lin is an immigrant from China.

3. Culture: The way of life and habits of a group of people. Example: Learning about Canadian culture takes time.

4. Stranger: A person you do not know. Example: Do not give personal information to a stranger.

5. Challenge: Something that is difficult and needs work to do. Example: Learning a new language is a big challenge.

6. Scary: Making you feel afraid or nervous. Example: Speaking to new people can feel scary at first.

7. Respect: Showing that you care about someone and treat them well. Example: Listening when someone speaks shows respect.

Grammar Focus: Asking Questions in the Present Simple

In English, we use two different rules to make questions in the Present Simple:

1. Questions with the verb "to be" (am, is, are)

2. Questions with other verbs (using do / does)

Part 1: Questions with the Verb "To Be" (Am / Is / Are)

Yes / No Questions

Move the verb to be to the front of the sentence.

Pattern: Am / Is / Are + Subject + Rest of sentence?

• Statement: You are Canadian.

• Question: Are you Canadian?

Wh- Questions (Information Questions)

Put the Wh- word (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) at the very front, before am, is, or are.

Pattern: Wh- word + am / is / are + Subject?

• Statement: Immigrants feel nervous because they're strangers.

• Question: Why do immigrants feel nervous?
