Definite and Indefinite Articles
Definite and Indefinite Articles (a, an, the)
In English, articles are short words we use before nouns. They are small, but they are very important in English!
The three main articles are:
a
an
the
They help us show which person or thing we are talking about.
Indefinite Articles: "a / an"
We use a or an when:
- we talk about something in general
Ex. - She has a cat.
- He is a teller.
- Or for the first time and the listener does not know which one we mean..
Ex. - He bought a phone yesterday. The phone wasn't expensive.
- She ordered a sandwich. The sandwich was delicious.
- Or when we talk about one thing or person.
Ex. Give me a pen.
I need a computer.
We use indefinite articles an before a vowel sound.
Ex. - She had an apple for breakfast.
- They rented an apartment downtown.
Definite Article: "the"
- We use the when we talk about a specific person or thing and the listener knows what we mean.
Ex. - Let's meet at the bus stop.
- She studies at the library.
- The doctor was considerate.
- When we talked about it before.
Ex. - He has a red car. The car is brand new.
- We met at a cafe. The cafe is close by.
- When there's only one of its kind.
Ex. We all need the sun.
- The earth is round.
- When we talk about oceans, seas, rivers, deserts, group of islands and mountain ranges.
Ex. The Nile River is the longest river in Africa.
- The Sahara Desert is the largest in the world.

Important:
In English, sometimes we use no article at all. This is called the zero article.
We Don’t Use Any Article (Ø Article) when:
- We talk about things in general and the noun is plural.
Ex. Elephants have strong memories.
- Cell phones are crucial.
- Uncountable nouns when speaking in general.
Ex. - We don't have time.
- Drinking water is important for your body.
- Before names of languages and school subjects.
Ex. - She speaks French and Danish.
- Math is his favorite subject.
- With meals when speaking generally.
Ex. - We always have lunch together.
- Don't skip breakfast. It's the most important meal.
- With single mountains, most lakes, most cities, and most countries.
Ex. - Lake Ontario is one of the biggest lakes in North America.
- Toronto is the capital city of Ontario.
- We usually don't use articles before countries, cities, and streets. (There are exception)
Ex. - We live in Canada.
- Toronto is a big city.
- He lives on Yonge street.
- We use the definite article "The" before certain countries.
Ex. He moved to the United States.
- The United Arab Emirates is in Asia.
