"Celebrating Our Journeys"
Elena: A student from Ukraine (lives in Canada for 1 year).
Samir: A student from Syria (lives in Canada for 3 years).
Setting: The school coffee room during a break.
Elena: Hi Samir! Are you going to the community center this Friday? They are having a special event.
Samir: Oh, really? What is the event for?
Elena: It is for International Migrants Day. It’s on December 18th.
Samir: Oh, I didn't know that! What do people do on Migrants Day?
Elena: It’s a day to recognize the hard work and contributions of immigrants around the world. At the center, people are sharing food, music, and stories from their home countries.
Samir: That sounds beautiful. Moving to a new country takes a lot of courage. It wasn't easy when I first arrived in Canada.
Elena: I understand. The first year is very difficult. You have to learn a new language, find a job, and get used to the cold winter!
Samir: Exactly! But immigrants also bring a lot of talent and skills to Canada. For example, my neighbor opened a wonderful bakery down the street.
Elena: Yes! We enrich the community. I want to go to the event to meet new people and feel proud of my journey. Do you want to come with me?
Samir: I would love to. Let’s go together after class. I can bring some Syrian sweets to share if it's allowed!
Elena: That's a great idea! I will check the flyer for the rules. See you on Friday!
