The Past Continuous Tense
The Past Continuous Tense
The Past Continuous tense (also known as the Past Progressive) is used to talk about actions or situations that were in progress at a specific moment in the past.
1. How It's Formed
To form the past continuous, you use the past tense of the verb to be (was / were) + the main verb with -ing.
{Subject} + {was/were} + {verb-ing}
Subject Alignment
Subject | Auxiliary Verb | Example Verb | Full Sentence |
I / He / She / It | was | working | She was working at 8 PM. |
You / We / They | were | working | They were working at 8 PM. |
2. When to Use It
A. Specific Time in the Past
Use it to show an action was mid-progress at a precise point in time.
Ex.
At 10:00 AM yesterday, I was sitting in a meeting.
What were you doing at midnight last night?
B. Interrupted Actions in the Past
Use the past continuous to describe a longer action that was happening when a shorter action (usually in the Simple Past) interrupted it.
Ex.
I was studying when the phone rang.
They were walking home when it started to rain.
Tip: We often use "when" before the Simple Past action and "while" before the Past Continuous action.
While I was cooking, he arrived.
C. Parallel Actions (Happening at the Same Time)
Use it when two or more actions were taking place simultaneously in the past.
Ex.
While Sarah was reading, Mark was cooking dinner.
The children were playing while their parents were talking.
D. Setting the Scene (Storytelling)
Use it at the beginning of a story to describe the background atmosphere or context.
Ex.
The sun was shining, and the birds were singing.
People were enjoying their day in the park when suddenly...

He wasn't listening to the teacher.
You / We / They: were not (weren't)
